Kate Nicholson has released her new single, Floor lamps. We asked him the BIG questions. . .

Tell us three things about yourself?

I grew up next to an alternative music festival site (Glasgowbury) in the heart of the Sperrins in Northern Ireland. It gave me an interest in the alternative music scene from a young age. I also grew up with traditional Irish music and I still come back to this music from time to time.

I went on my honeymoon to Nashville, Tennessee. We attended an “in the round” singer-songwriter night at the Bluebird Cafe and were able to hang out in the same location as Johnny Cash and hundreds of other legends were standing in to perform at the Ryman Auditorium. Music is something I keep coming back to. I worked in a music store and in Belfast’s famous Empire Music Hall during college where I heard amazing bands like the late Rab McCullough and his outstanding blues band, Ken Haddock, and bands and songwriters – songwriters like Lisa Hannigan.

I am the mother of a 19 month old baby boy and I am expecting a new baby at the end of July. I am also a general practitioner. Sometimes people can think of these things as a weird match with the music and sometimes me too. But it was a very humbling job and gave me a three-dimensional view of the human condition from birth to end, with all its ups and downs and the many sorrows and struggles.

How would you describe your music?

My music falls within the genre of alternative singer-songwriters and I think it also reflects my varied tastes for music while still being myself. There are elements of alternative rock, alternative folk, and alternative country. What ties it all together is the love for songwriting, lyrics and melodies.

I like great storytellers and songwriters who make you feel something, for example Tom Waits. Other inspirations are Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, Lana del Rey. My last single, Floor lamps, is inspired by Americana and a sound by Tom Petty.

How did you deal with the coronavirus lockdown?

By writing and releasing this album! This album was written and recorded when conditions permitted during confinement 2020. I was on maternity leave at the time and found confinement 1 in particular extremely isolating. There were no groups / nurseries for babies or any other means of support. Family or friends were not even allowed to visit. As an adaptation strategy, I invested my energies in the creation of this album. It wasn’t easy as the lack of sleep was huge at the time, but it was truly a saving grace for me and something I had wanted to do for a long time.

Today i loved Melted into you by Mazzy Star.

Favorite lyrics of all time?

“And you could have it all, my dirt empire. I’ll let you down. I’ll hurt you.” Hurt by Nine Inch Nails.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Marthe by Tom Waits. I think he has a simple beauty. You can really hear the longing and the longing. It is by no means over-produced and keeps you tuned throughout. Although I find these questions really difficult! Perhaps In the mystic by Van Morrison.
