Listen to a new TV theme song from Courtney Barnett
Courtney Barnett may be in the midst of rolling out her upcoming third album, but she has found the time to do a theme song for television.
The Australian singer-songwriter has unveiled ‘Smile Real Nice’, the theme song for the new Apple TV + anime adaptation of Harriet spies on it.
An update on the 1964 children’s novel of the same name, it arrives on the streaming platform on November 19. Beanie Feldstein (who appears to be everywhere right now) voices the titular spy, with Jane Lynch (Joy) and Lacey Chabert (Wild thorns) completing an intriguing cast.
In the meantime, you can check out Barnett’s enjoyable theme song below. It’s Barnett’s classic fare, slightly jangly with cruising electric guitars; the Arthur theme song it’s not. “I don’t wanna be / You don’t wanna be / We don’t wanna be / We tell you what to do,” she sings. That’s enough to make you drop everything and become a spy slash writer.
Barnett’s third album, Things take time, take time, arrives a week before Harriet spies on it November 12 (via Milk! / Marathon Artists). It contains the previously released singles “Rae Street”, “Before You Gotta Go” and “Write a List of Things to Look Forward To”.
This is the sequel to 2018 Tell me how you really feel, which peaked at No.2 in the ARIA Albums Chart. It also won the award for best rock album at that year’s ARIA Music Awards.
She also covered ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ for a tribute album to Velvet Underground & Nico, I’ll Be Your Mirror: Tribute to Velvet Underground & Nico, last month.
