TEMPORARY WORKERS: Red Bulls sign Mullings and Castillo on short-term loans
The Red Bulls have signed New York Red Bulls II defenders O’vonte Mullings and Juan Castillo on short-term loans, the club announced on Wednesday.
Under MLS rules, the short-term deal allows clubs to sign a player on loan from their affiliates for MLS, Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, Concacaf Champions League, Canadian Championship and exhibition matches.
The defenders will be available for the Red Bulls’ home game against Charlotte FC on Wednesday in the Open Cup. The Round of 16 game kicks off at 8 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPN+ and New York Red Bulls Radio in English and Spanish via TuneIn, the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
Mullings, 21, has played nine games for NYRB II this season, logging 771 minutes. He leads the club in assists (three). The Toronto, Ont., native signed with Red Bulls II on March 4 after a four-year college career at Florida Gulf Coast University. Mullings made 57 appearances and scored 28 goals.
Castillo, 19, is in his second year with NYRB II and has worn the club’s captain’s armband several times this season. He made 40 career USL Championship appearances over two seasons, registering three assists. The native of Tumaco, Colombia has played and started in every game this season.
